Ten questions to ask before you hire a security company

Price matters, but the officers at your gate are what you are really buying. These questions help you compare providers on what counts.

When you hire a security company, what you are really buying is the people at your gate and the system behind them. Price matters, but a cheap contract that fails when it is tested is the most expensive kind. These questions help you compare providers on what counts.

About the officers

  1. How are officers recruited and vetted? Ask what background and reference checks are carried out before anyone is deployed.
  2. What training do they receive, and how often is it refreshed? Initial training is not enough; skills fade without refreshers.
  3. Are they checked for medical and physical fitness? Officers on long shifts need to be fit for the job.
  4. How are they supervised? Find out who checks on officers during a shift, especially at night.

About the company

  1. Is the company properly registered? Ask for its registration details and any relevant certifications, such as ISO 9001.
  2. Who are its current clients? Ask for references from organisations similar to yours.
  3. How are incidents reported? You should know what happens, and who tells you, when something goes wrong.
  4. What technology supports the guards? Guard tour systems, CCTV and access control make performance visible.
  5. How is armed support arranged if needed? In Nigeria, armed cover should come through proper liaison with the police or armed forces.
  6. How will they handle your information? A security provider sees a lot about your business. Ask how it is kept confidential.
